Dragon Age: The (Dread) Veilguard

Did I get caught unawares by the Reveal Trailer for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, rebrandend to Dragon Age: The Veilguard? You bet. Was I shocked or disgusted? Mildly surprised, may be the words I’d choose. Truth be told,I was pretty much sure there would be a slight change in tone when the Dreadwolf-Logo turned purple.

But, after reading the comments to the trailer and sleeping on it, I am pretty positive this won’t be as bad as one might think at first glance. The marketing campaign has been ongoing for so long, including books, comics and so forth, why bother with a background story when dropping the reveal trailer? I am still convinced the gameplay trailer will be something else.

The Characters
We start off with two familiar faces: Varric Tethras and Lace Harding. While in the midst of a fight, they muse about who they could add to their team. A mage killer (assassin), a detective, a necromancer, a veil jumper (whatever that may be), and a dragon hunter. Of course, that team needs a leader, a job the dasher and initial viscount of Kirkwall does not feel up to in his old age. So, this task falls to our hero, Rook, who ist presented as a rogue with Assassin’s Creed‘s Edward Kenway moves in the trailer.

Remember the character trailers of Dragon Age: Inquisition? I loved those and, who knows, they maybe coming back as we inch closer to the release date in fall 2024. Apart from that, when I first watched the Dragon Age: Origins-trailer, I thought it was one of the most childish, most ham-fisted trailers ever. That dragon take-down was just – silly. There you go.

I shall be reserving my judgement until I have viewed the gameplay trailer and some more.

Until then!

Cheers
