SNIPER ELITE 5 – Comparing The Story DLCs (PS5)

After having detailled my favorite run of Landing Force, the second story-DLC of SNIPER ELITE 5 I put a pause on playing that game for quite some time. Therefore I did not realise that there are three additional story DLCs that have come out since. Those are Conqueror, Rough Landing and Kraken Awakens. Like the first DLC Wolf Mountain and Landing Force, they are set in the aftermath of the main game, so more or less a mop-up session in three parts

I will not be detailling the single DLCs in this post, but compare all five of them. Which had the best setting? The most challenging objectives? Which was the most fun to play? There will be SPOILERS, so, here we go.

Welcome to the Wolf Mountain-DLC.

The Settings

Wolf Mountain is set in the Alps, and it offers beautiful vistas, relatively few places to go to ground and plenty of opportunities to get a pretty long shot. So you can get the most out of your sniper skills but need to rely on stealth and close quarter combat at the same time.

Landing Force is the DLC I went into in detail. You can read up on my favorite way to go about it here. Set on the island of Le Rocher, Karl needs to make sure the alleid fleet can pass the light tower unnoticed. It’s a lot of fun, actually.

Ready to conquer the castle!

Conqueror sees Karl Fairburne infiltrate a coastal city in ruins, with the ultimate goal the castle fortress where his primary target is hiding out. Much like the V2- and St. Nazaire-settings, this one is a challenge when you try to be as stealthy as possible. And – remember- taking down tanks has changed quite a lot from SNIPER ELITE 4.

Rough Landing is extremely reminiscent of the Regilino Viaduct mission in SNIPER ELITE 4 and I am totally here for it. That one was my absolutely favorite in that game. So, much like that DLC, you will discover objectives all over the map. You will have unobstructed views to get long shots, a lot of different paths to get to your specific destinations, and ample room to improvise. This one certainly is a top contender.

Rough Landing offers a bunch of objectives you need to complete.

The last – or latest? – DLC, Kraken Awakens, is set in a tightly guarded port facility that will test your stealth abilities, since there are guard absolutely everywhere. Along with a ton of snipers. The most challenging part ist tracking down your main target inside the bowels of the aircraft carrier stealthily. Which I have not managed to date. The stealthy part, I mean.

So I replayed the DLCs after having reached Karl Fairburne’s moniker on SNIPER ELITE-difficulty.

The Objectives

In Wolf Mountain your primary objective is assassinating the Fuehrer. Your other objectives are taking down communications and taking out the AA guns that dot the landscape.

Landing Force has Karl disable the AA guns and heavy artillery on the island as well as taking down a kill list target and the light house.

Ouch! So I wanted to get that nice shot of the mountain in the background while under fire…

Conqueror again requires anti AA gun-action a well as clearing out three snipers, the motor pool, plus taking down a Tiger tank, a kill list target and your primary target. So, the plate is getting fuller. This one I tried to play as a pacifist. Tag the soldiers you encounter in the beginning with your binoculars and you will probably understand why.

In Rough Landing, Karl Fairburne has to find a Resistance camp and four downed Allied fighter pilots, take down a Tiger tank, retrieve two sets of intelligence seized by the enemy and take out a traitor and a high-ranking officer. Even more to do! Which is great, especially since a couple of objectives are set close together. And, if you are quick in the beginning, you can take out Becker when he pays a visit to the church in the village.

Cinematic getaway at the end of Kraken Awakens.

Kraken Awakens has you take down Mueller’s second, Vogel, as well as a kill list target, and destroy the rest of the submarines constructed in the wake of the Kraken program. The latter objective is relatively easy to accomplish – though you may miss it entirely if you ignore Fairburne’s advice on where to infiltrate – , but your primary objective has you take on an entire port crawling with guards and snipers, as well as searching and sabotaging a huge, labyrinthine ship in order to track down Vogel.

The Verdict

Like the Regilino Viaduct in SNIPER ELITE 4, the Rough Landing-DLC is my absolute favorite in SNIPER ELITE 5. No surprise there, really.

Which one is your favorite?

Until then, keep on playing!

Cheers
