In the most recent entry of my Favorite Missions-series I promised I’d be covering all the Dishonored-games. So here is my favorite mission from Dishonored 2 with my favorite from Dishonored: Death Of The Outsider thrown in as bonus.
Also, here is a overview of which games and missions were featured in this series so far:
Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Saving Caterina Sforza: The romance, the humor! Everything about that relationship, really.
Deus ex: Mankind Divided, Claiming Jurisdiction: Do you choose the smart, stealthy approach, or brute force?
Deus ex: Human Revolution, Infiltrating Tai Yong Medical and confronting Zhao: That’s one intense infiltration mission where my sole goal is remaining undetected.
Assassin’s Creed II, Assassinating the Templar Doge: This one is Ezio’s masterpiece and a kind of deja-vu.
Thief, A Friend In Need: The master-thief may not need friends, but he does not let his allies down. Even if it means walking into a trap.
Assassin’s Creed, Assassinating William of Montferat: Over the past missions Altair has gained notoriety and this hit is the last one before he faces his arch-nemesis, so the stakes are high and the guards on high alert.
Aragami, The Last Captain: While the wraith-like aragami can usually take full advantage of the shadows and strike his enemies down like some awesome predator, in this intense confrontation he is the one being hunted.
Dishonored, Eliminating The High Overseer (and some more): The first mission in this game is a defining one, I think. And, as a bonus, I added my favorite missions from the two story DLCS Knife Of Dunwall and The Brigmore Witches.
Why this mission?
While I absolutly agree with everyone that the Clockwork Mansion is the best level of this game and Corvo is a badass when taking down Clockwork Soldiers, I prefer the Dust District, under thr premise of playing as a ghost and preferably without killing anyone. And if that is the goal, you will need serious stealth skills and patience, as you will have to traverse back and forth across the hostile territories to get what you need to proceed.
Also, there are two non-lethal options, and – given the premise of playing it stealthy – I will pick the easier one, because schlepping two bodies around the district is no fun.
The Approach
Playing as Corvo, in this mission I lean heavily on Blink, Bend Time and Possession, the latter having been upgraded to possessing humans. Since I have played the Dishonored games many, many times I actually had to go back in memory to remember that the Dust District was one of the hardest ones for me during my first playthrough. Mainly because I was unaware of this second non-lethal option.
To unlock it, you have to explore both the Hatter’s hideout and the Overseer Outpost. You need to do that anyway, because the most obvious solution to your mission objective is killing the leader of the other faction and bringing his body to the other in order for them to help you.
But, if you stay your hand and really look around and listen, you will learn that Durante, an associate of Paolo’s, has actually solved the riddle to unlock the Jindosh lock separating you from getting into Aramis Stilton’s manor. Which is your main objective.
The problem: Durante was taken by the Overseers, so the key to his locked office is in their compound. And, not only that, it is right in the rather crowded office where you will also find the Overseer you’d need to kill otherwise. Once you managed to liberate it – preferably undetected, maybe possess somebody? – sneak into the Crone’s Head pub and use Blink and Bend Time to get into Durante’s office and pick up the solution to opening the Jindosh lock. You will also find the clue to the other non-lethal option there.
Get out, open the lock and you are done!
Bonus-Mission: One Last Fight (Dishonored: Death Of The Outsider)
Why this mission?
Why indeed this one, the first mission of the game? Daud is one of my favorite video game characters ever and the first mission is his grand re-entry into the franchise after the end of The Brigmore Witches. So, of course I was very much looking forward to seeing him again. And, while he has certainly aged in the past fifteen years that have passed in-game, seeing him take out his captors using Blink in an absolutely ruthless display, had me whooping in delight during my very first playthrough.
The approach
This game is Billie Lurk’s show and during this first mission she does not have any powers. So, stealth is, again, key. During the mission your can fulfill two side contracts (disposing of a sick wolfhound and destroying a cache), which is a neat way of fleshing out the world and the mission.
Getting to the boxing club in the old bathhouse, which is your objective, you will need to avoid detection by the city guards – yes, Billie is, again, a wanted woman – and, once you enter the upper level of the bathhouse, which is restricted, the Eyeless themselves. I usually use sleeping darts to deal with the latter, when necessary.
Of course, the main reason for getting to the restricted area is finding a means to free Daud, who has been made the Eyeless cult’s captive. During my very first playthrough I did just that right away, without even thinking about taking out the patrons myself first. Well. I was rewarded with watching Daud scythe through them, which you don’t get if you do the heavy lifting for him. So, that’s a plus.
After, he will make his own way to the Dreadful Whale, Billie’s ship, while she has to evade guards once more, and do it even more stealthily than before.
And that’s it for Favorite Mission Nine!
Next up is my review for Ghostwire: Tokyo.
Until then, keep on playing.
Cheers
Vanessa
